How does archaeology help us rediscover women’s historical roles? Which woman’s story resonated most with you? How can we ensure more diverse voices are included in historical narratives?

We are increasingly finding that Archaeology is uncovering the remarkable contributions of women across history.
For me, my first dig in Gotland was a game-changer: I found a tiny Swedish ‘pärla’ bead, quickly followed by a spindle whorl. These everyday objects brought these early medieval women to life— farmers and fishers' wives spinning wool, wearing beads, shaping their communities with day-to-day tasks. It showed me how archaeology connects us to ‘ordinary’ people.
Let’s discuss!
- What artefact or site has inspired you about women’s historical roles?
- What’s a fact about women’s history that you wish more people knew?
- Got a photo? Share images of relevant artefacts! 📷
