On 11 July 2025, the Yorkshire Museum will unveil Viking North, a stunning exhibition that brings the Viking Age in Northern England (866–1066) to life. This is one of the most significant collections of Viking artefacts ever displayed outside London, packed with rare finds and fresh insights into a transformative era.
Viking North showcases a remarkable array of objects, many of which are in public view for the first time. The exhibition features the Yorkshire Museum’s renowned collection alongside the Vale of York hoard—a breathtaking cache of Viking silver, coins, and jewellery co-owned with the British Museum. Exclusive loans, including artefacts from the Viking Army Camp at Aldwark in North Yorkshire, are displayed together for the first time. These objects, from intricate brooches to battle-scarred weapons, reveal the Vikings’ power, craft, and influence as they shaped the North.

Built on groundbreaking archaeological research, Viking North uses cutting-edge technology to uncover new stories about the artefacts. Interactive displays draw you into the Viking world, making history feel vivid and immediate.
This exhibition charts the Vikings’ dominance in Northern England from the Great Heathen Army’s invasion in 866 to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The North was their stronghold—a hub for conquest, trade, and alliances. Artefacts from the Aldwark camp, a key Viking military site, highlight their strategic might and lasting impact.
A dynamic lineup of events, from expert talks to hands-on workshops, will complement the exhibition. For updates, visit the museum’s website.
