The 2025 Richard Hall Symposium: A Day Out with the Vikings (York Archaeology)

The Richard Hall Symposium is returning to its original Festival of Ideas slot in 2025, with ‘A Day Out with the Vikings’, which will look at the past, present and future of festivals and public events on a Viking theme. A panel of invited speakers will join the discussion, which will look at re-enactment, reconstructed Viking ships, Viking festivals across the British Isles and Europe, and the JORVIK Viking Festival itself, which can be traced back to York city centre events staged for the first time in summer 1985.

Ancient Archaeology Alive: Bryn Celli Ddu Open Day

A celebration of prehistoric Wales and beyond Bryn Celli Ddu and its surrounding landscape is truly magical. One of the most important aspects of being there is the fabulous surroundings: the monument is not only beautiful but is also one of the most important and best-preserved examples of a Neolithic passage tomb in Wales, dating to around 5,000 years old. Come and find out more about this special place, and enjoy a day of living history, tours, exhibits, food demonstrations and a range of hands-on experimental archaeology activities for all the family. Throughout the day, attendees will be invited to watch live flint knapping demonstrations with flint experts Ancient Crafts; take a bilingual archaeology tour of the monument with the famous punk antiquarian Rhys Mwyn; watch demonstrations of ancient pot making techniques; through to finding out more about ancient natural dyes, ochre mineral paint pigments and the colourful geology of the island with Stone Science.

Festival of Archaeology at Chedworth Roman Villa

From 19 July-3 August 2025, Chedworth will be hosting several events and activities to tie in with the Festival of Archaeology, an annual festival coordinated by the Council for British Archaeology, events will include: Mosaic cleaning: Come and see how our conservation team cleans some of the finest mosaics in Britain. Artefact handling: Our knowledgeable volunteers will guide you as you handle genuine and replica Roman artefacts. After the dig: Find out what happens after archaeologists finish an excavation. Learn about the meticulous process of recording each find and understand how objects help us to piece together the past. Archaeological discovery: Demonstration of an archaeological dig where ‘discoveries’ are made before your eyes. Pack a picnic and enjoy a relaxing day of games, puzzles, dress up and more.
